My name is Karina and I’ve been living in the USA for almost 5 years. For some people, it might be a long time, for others — a short one. I have lived the biggest part of my life in Saint Petersburg, Russia. We came to the USA because my husband, an engineer, was transferred to work in Seattle. Of course, it wasn’t until I moved that I realized that the USA is a country that has people with different cultures and mentalities than my own. I really love some things in this country, but some other things will always be a bit strange for me.
Especially for Viral Inspiral, I am going to tell you about some habitual American things that still seem strange and surprising for me.
1. Waking up for work at 5 a.m.
Once, an American woman told me, “I don’t even know why we have to do it.” I laughed at this a lot because until that day, I thought that all Americans went to work at 6-7 a.m. because they wanted to. Turns out, I was wrong. However, many people like this schedule and start their workday at 6 a.m. to get off by 2 p.m. They can do other stuff after work — some volunteer, others have kids, etc.
